Motorcycle exhaust and muffler specialist

Hello, my name is Damon Gruenwald. I started Cycleworks in 1977 in Makara, and have now been in business for 31 years. This all started by doing odd jobs for friends and then developing into what Cycleworks is today - specialising in motorcycle exhaust and muffler systems.

Originally I was doing welding repairs, and then started doing frame modifications to accept longer travel suspension and then expansion chambers for motocross bikes.

Then, with encouragement from Robert Holden, began manufacturing 4 into 1 systems for Suzuki bikes for Wellington Motorcycles. Being involved with racers like Robert Holden in the early days really helped me understand what was required for serious racing. Owning various road bikes myself, plus riding with lots of friends, taught me a lot about what the average road rider was looking for in exhaust systems. Then through the years creating race systems for Tony McMurdo, Bill Biber, Duncan McKee, Eddie Kattenberg, Paul Adams, Sean Kelly, Craig Gollop, Sean Donnelly, Jason McEwen, Frank Towbar Leufkens, Brendon Rodgers, Murray Anderson, Richard Scott, Peter Daniells, Todd Moffat, Graham Wilson, and many more, we learned so much more about real performance systems.

We made the big move out to the Hutt Valley in 1984 to Eastern Hutt Road, where we are still today.

In the early 1980s we built our first tube bender and press. In 2007 we built an up-dated version which is still being finished.

With the desire to consistently develop new ideas and design, the result is not being stuck to one style or design, but we are able to produce a huge variety of motorcycle exhaust and muffler systems.

Recently we entered the export game and now there are Americans and Europeans enjoying Cycleworks motorcycle exhaust and muffler systems as well.

Nico Robins has been with me now for over 20 years and is an amazing engineering artist. Cycleworks would not be the same without him. He rides to work everyday on a trusty classic XS 650, and gets out in the weekend occasionally on his 250 Husky.

Today I am still as crazy a motorcycle nut as when I started. Some phases never fade. Currently, I ride a BMW R1200 GS for two up adventure riding and exploring back country roads with my partner Julie. Then for more dirty riding, I get out on either a GasGas trials bike or a GasGas 300 Enduro bike. Plus because I really like 70s dirt bikes I collect/restore/ride VMX and that is a real passion as well.
